Salcott Virley: St Mary the Virgin

The Street Salcott Virley Maldon
07908 776750

Our 2* Listed church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, is in the centre of the village and dates from the 13th century. Although the Essex earthquake damaged it, happily the flint tower remained intact. The nave was extensively restored and the chancel entirely rebuilt. The whole structure has been well-maintained over the years. It is valued locally for its peaceful and simple interior and for its well-kept churchyard.

The PCC go to considerable lengths to ensure that the church is kept open 7 days a week during daylight hours and a coffee point has been established for the benefit of congregation, walkers and casual visitors. Plans are in hand to add toilet and small kitchen facilities which will extend the possibilities for the church to develop its role as an anchor for the small village community.

The regular, fortnightly, Eucharist (CW) at 11.30am are on the first and third Sundays of each month. There is currently no organised Sunday School, although children who have received suitable instruction are welcome to take communion at our services. Children are particularly encouraged to join us at services with Christingle particularly well attended. The soft seating at the tower end of the church is available to young people who are encouraged to use it whenever the church is open.

In addition to Sunday services, we have been developing activities which will draw the local community into the church and parish life. These have included strawberry teas, supported with local business sponsorship; plant sales; bring and buy sales; jumble sales; quizzes and table top sales.

We are committed to Safeguarding children and young people and vulnerable adults.

The PCC has adopted the Church of England's policies and best practice on safeguarding which may be found on the Church of England's website: https://www.churchofengland.org/more/safeguarding, or on the Safeguarding pages of the Chelmsford Diocese: https://www.chelmsford.anglican.org/safeguarding
